About Lindsey
Dean, 17
For over 20 years, I’ve worked in special education and as a school SLPA, always guided by one persistent question: “How can we do better?” Too often, I saw the low expectations placed on individuals with disabilities—especially non-speakers—and knew we had to create something different.
I believe non-speaking individuals deserve to be fully included in every aspect of life: daily routines, education, friendships, goals, dreams, and adventures. Not being able to use speech should never limit a person’s influence over their own choices—whether that’s ordering a cup of coffee, deciding what to study, or pursuing higher education.
As an Assistive Technology Specialist, I am fluent in programming and supporting various Augmentative and Alternative Communication systems (Proloquo2Go, Proloquo4Text, TouchChat, LAMP, and more). Yet, I often saw these devices left untouched, sitting in baskets until “speech time.” When AAC isn’t treated as a valid, everyday language, individuals are left without a way to connect and participate. That is simply not acceptable.
My work focuses on equipping both individuals and their support networks—parents, siblings, caregivers, teachers, aides, neighbors, and friends—to become confident communication partners. Through AAC skill building sessions, one-on-one coaching, and group trainings, I help families and communities embrace and use functional communication so non-speakers can be included and heard.

I am also passionate about helping students pursue education at every level. Once communication is unlocked, many are eager for knowledge and ready to engage in learning. I provide the organizational strategies and coaching families need to create the right support systems so students can succeed—from homeschooling to college courses.
